I have read everything that Denise Grover Swank has written. I tend to like more of the non-romance type of books but not with Denise. I really like the way she writes her characters and her romance. She doesn't come on too hot and heavy with them. There is a gradual, natural feeling to the relationships. You never feel as though there is an insta-love between the characters. Sometimes you aren't even sure if there is going to be a happily ever after.I enjoyed this book a lot and I really want to go to Paris even more now. Even though I have never been, I thought that the descriptions of Paris and the area were so well done that I felt like I was there. I also felt like Denise did a great job writing from a teenager's point of view. She got the drama and such down really well, and I'm sure having teenagers helped with that part. ;)I read this in one day because I was so engrossed in the story. I wanted to keep reading so I could find out what was going to happen. Like I said previously, you aren't always sure you are going to get a HEA with Denise so you've just got to keep reading until you find out! I highly recommend this story for anyone who was a teenager once and had that one love that was worth everything.

Sophie and her brother Eric are just landing in Paris for a forced visit with their estranged father as the book starts. What happens after the opening is a true representation of family dynamics. Dad abandoned his kids to take off for his dream job in Paris a year ago. Now, the kids have been summoned to Paris to attend his wedding. Sophie was daddy's little girl until his sudden departure. Now the resentment, anger, fear and hope are pouring out as Sophie meets Eva and her teen daughter Camille.Camille resents giving up her room for Eric and having to share a room with Sophie. She goes out of her way to let everyone know she is not happy with the current situation. Camille has been tasked with showing her new siblings around Paris this summer. Along with her friends, Camille makes Sophie's life a miserable experience. Then along comes this hunky Parisian boy who seems to have little interest but he fascinates Sophie. The only respite Sophie has is her music. She is a very talented pianist and her dad had promised her mom that he would make sure she had access to a piano to practice over the summer. This doesn't exactly work out and in steps that handsome boy. His mom teaches music, she has a piano Sophie can use for her practice. The story goes on to show a sweet romance, more angst and turmoil caused by Camille until Sophie heads home to figure out what her future holds. Will she make good choices? Will her handsome Parisian have a part in that future, and what about Sophie's musical future?Pick up your copy and find out!

I don't typically read YA, but I love Denise. I found that this was a good book if I was reading as a teenager it would be great. I always want a little more adult type reading, but overall it was appropriate for a teenager. And I believe a lot of what Sophie goes through many teenage girls would as well, except maybe the part about being forced to go to Paris. However since her father lived there it makes sense that she would be forced to go see him and his new wife, and as a teenage girl she would be pretty angry about it. The fact that her father left her mother and moved across the world and became wrapped up in his new life. I could totally see where she was coming from as if looking through a teen girls eyes. Very well done, and I want to see what happens next.

Most teens would jump at the chance to spend the summer in Paris, but not Sophie Brooks. She's only going because she has to. Her father, who abandoned the family a year ago, is getting remarried in the City of Lights and she and her older brother Eric are being forced by both parents to spend the summer with him, his new wife and her soon to be step-sister. She has to leave behind her best friend and abandon her summer plans to practice for a piano scholarship that means everything. As if that's not bad enough, the step-sister turns out to be worse than any things Cinderella ever faced, her father isn't keeping his promises to find her a piano to practice on and she's falling for a cute French boy who's definitely off limits. How could such a magical city be such a nightmare? One Paris Summer is heartbreaking and hard at times, euphoric and adventuresome at others. I spent much of the first quarter of the book fighting back my own emotions as Sophie struggled with her feelings about her father. The author did an outstanding job of dialing into what it feels like to be a child, even an older one, left by a parent. At times it was difficult to read because it felt so real.Sophie's relationship with her brother was interesting, too. As a little sister, I have to say, it felt pretty authentic, especially when, at times he wouldn't speak up when he needed to, and at other times he was way too overprotective when it wasn't necessary. The step-sister seemed a little over the top, but in today's culture of bullying, I'm afraid she wasn't as far-fetched as I'd like to believe. Mathieu was a great character, kind, appealing and handsome, but what I liked best was how supportive he was of Sophie. My only complaint was that I didn't feel like I understood him as well as I'd have liked.I think what I liked the most, though, was how hard Sophie's dad worked toward repairing the damage he had done. Watching him come to understand how much damage he had done and work to fix it, was very moving. The descriptions of Paris and of Sophie's music were wonderful bonuses that only added charm to this book for me. A sweet love story with a depth of emotion I wasn't expecting, I thoroughly enjoyed One Paris Summer.
