As a half decent league shooter who possesses neither the game nor the balls enough to have experienced what these road warriors did, I thoroughly enjoyed the vicarious thrill these stories provided. The descriptions of this shady underworld are so raw and so real that the reader is treated to the impression of almost being there. Some of the characters that occupy these pages are truly horrifying in the manner that they comport themselves... terrible hygiene, disgusting habits and low-life ambitions are only some of the characteristics of these hustlers display. (I suppose if I was playing cards and/or shooting pool for days and weeks on end, I'd become a tad ripe my damn self.) Many, many personalities are described and explored, and I was forced to revise some of my long held impressions about certain individuals. A great example of perception versus reality exists in the persons of Minnesota Fats and Willie Mosconi. I've always admired Willie Mosconi, who I viewed as a man of class, the consummate gentleman. The straight pool master with the talent to achieve a run of 526 balls before tiring of the exercise, and quitting before the run ended with a miss. Minnesota Fats, on the other hand, has always been portrayed a self-promoting blowhard, the man who appropriated his moniker from the movie "The Hustler", regardless of denials from Walter Tevis, the author of the book the movie was based upon. Real life descriptions don't fit this scenario quite so neatly. Willie Mosconi, from what I've read here, as well as in some other books this one inspired my to purchase, comes off as an irascible prick, while the soft, humanitarian side of the Fat Man is revealed... he is generous to both men and beasts. The only reason I did not award this book with five stars is the quality (or lack of... ) the photographs printed within. Most are rather small, with a dark and grainy quality to them. At first I wrote this off... this is all they had to work with. However, after receiving Jay Helfert's "Pool Wars", and seeing some of the same photos reproduced in a much larger and much clearer format, I realize that this book might have been able to do a bit better. All in all, though, this is a must read for anyone who longs to immerse themselves in this self described "dank and musty netherworld"! Great job, and may God rest your soul, "Freddy the Beard"... thanks for sharing so much of your life... it's priceless!!!
One star because the dirty bastards made the print microscopic . Inexcusable ! I bet the big hardcover edition is nice . Much repetition as the stories of various hustlers overlap but entertaining . Bentivengna uses a lot of the same material in his book, The Gospool of Bank Pool also . The first rule of Journalism is " Sell everything 3 times " .
This is a great book to read for any fan of billiards. I absolutely loved it. Great stories of the legendary pool hustlers of olden days.I finished reading it in a few days and have lent it to a friend of mine.
The book itself is entertaining but the writing is not very polished at all. If you can wiggle your way through that, its not bad.
If you've been around serious pool gambling for years, most of these guys you probably never heard of. So the book is worth it if you're over 45 or so and hung out in real hard edge pool halls.
