"Academic Moves for College and Career Readiness provides clarity and structure for teachers who seek to help their students become more competent and confident thinkers, and does so without compromising the critical role of a teacher′s content knowledge and creativity in a dynamic classroom. Its economy of expression makes complex ideas accessible, while annotated student work provides a window into learner application. Most significantly, the book is written in the voice of teachers, who live what they recommend." I was recently posted to 8th grade, from teaching 11th, and I have spent the first two weeks of my summer break reading this book, and it has given me so many ideas, not only for my class (ELA), but also ideas I wish to share with my team. It is a wonderful book, with ideas that are practical, make sense, can be differentiated based on grade level and difficulty level, and it also provides wonderful ideas for how to use youtube in the classroom. Finally, the best part is that it lists the common core standards (for all core classes) that match up with the information provided in the chapter. Wonderful wonderful read.
Let me say up front that I'm a big Jim Burke fan. I've followed his work for more than a decade and had the distinct pleasure of getting to know him personally in the last few years. That being said, this may be his best book ever. Not that his others weren't great. But they were great in a different way. This book CRUSHES the most important challenges teachers and kids have these days with critical thinking and evidence-based reading. Even if just one of the 15 concepts covered here was useful to a teacher, this would still be an incredibly valuable book. The fact that they all are makes me feel like I just got the deal of the century. The key for me here were the student samples. Showing the work of real kids doing real work, and also uncovering how they were taught to do it, completes the picture so many of us need but so rarely receive.Over the last 20 years, I've acquired several thousand books about teaching and learning. I've even written a few things myself. But I don't think I've ever run across something this useful, this accessible, and this thorough that tackles such challenging topics. The issues real teachers in real classrooms have to deal with are dealt with thoughtfully and with care by Mr. Burke and his co-author. These two very talented practitioners explain things in such lucid detail that I feel like I would walk into a classroom tomorrow, having just read most of the book tonight, and do pretty well. The other thing I like about this book is that it treats enduring topics. The ability to analyze a text and write an analysis of it is never going to be out of style no matter which way the pendulum of pedagogy swings. This is a book I will keep and use for years. That's a rare thing in the world of teaching texts.I know of few people who have given more to education than Jim Burke. He has my professional admiration and respect but also something more: he has my trust. I know that what he tells me to do is what I need to do to help kids do what they need to do—and not some faddish load of bull. Jim takes his work seriously and himself a little less so. He's always welcoming, never condescending. And he may just have the sharpest mind in high school English that I have ever had the pleasure of getting to know.
I wish it was more detailed but it covers the basics.
I was very pleased with this book---more importantly, I'm certain it will benefit my students.
Book is great but my copy is missing page 133-134...kind of a bummer. Love the way each key skill is broken down and explained with examples. Wish the book was complete. Then I would give it 5 stars.
An excellent guide for high school teachers on preparing students to make critical analysis, formulate arguments, and cultivate strong writing skills. The book is clearly laid out and posits concrete step by step support for teachers in pedagogy skills with myriad classroom examples and informative rubrics that give teachers confidence and direction in creating real results in learning in the classroom. A fine primer for new teachers or for those with more experience wishing to revisit the efficacy of core teaching principles.
As a college professor I'm very pleased to see a book of this quality in the hands of teachers who are training my future students. This book will be very helpful for teachers who want to help their students learn to make and defend arguments with the kind of maturity and wisdom that will help them succeed in college and beyond.
Barry Gilmore and Jim Burke are spot on with those specific criteria for assessment for any level. Absolutely plan to use the rubrics and rework some of my strategies for presenting essays to eighth graders!
