My 7 year old daughter was requesting 1st. Confession and 1st. Communion for many weeks. As a Catholic convert myself I was concerned she was too young and not ready. She was persistent and asking almost every other day to be able to take the Blood and Body of Christ. I agreed to order her some materials and we would start helping her learn more about Confession and Holy Communion. I informed her that if she really wanted to do this that she would need to be the one to ask for her 'lessons' to prepare herself and that we would not force her. So many of the educational products/sources seemed for a lack of a better word, 'fluffy' and confusing as to the realities of what these sacraments really are. Then I found The New Saint Joseph First Communion Catechism which is not new at all. Originally printed in the 60's. I love it. Very simple and straight forward and not overwhelmed with a lot of fluffy instruction. My daughter loved it as well. We are so blessed that she wanted 1st Confession and 1st. Communion of her own chossing and earnestly requested it and eagerly prepared for it. She couldn't wait until Easter. Easter came early for us! We are so thankful!

If your child will be receiving First Holy Communion, you should have this book. Today most Religious Education classes are woefully insufficient for teaching the Faith and understanding Who they are receiving! Parents are the first educators of the Faith! St. John Paul II emphasized this over and over. Do not leave the Faith to the Church volunteers alone. Teaching them also inspires and renews your own faith and love of the Eucharist. Get started today!!

This book is really great! I have been reading it with my daughter leading up to her First Communion and she is surprisingly really interested and has LOTS of questions. Hate to say it, but at this age it's hard to keep kids "interested" in religion, but she is really into this book! We just read a short chapter each night along with her other reading and she asks LOTS of questions. So great, I decided to write this review for it!

I teach Sacramental Preparation for First Communion. I have used this book to educate over 200 children. I feel my kids are prepared for a life with Christ after studying this book.

great catechism for children (and adults!) of any age! well-written and easy to follow!one of my kiddos reads this book every week at Mass and it has really helped him grow his understanding of our faith.i may love this book as much as he does!

This is a great resource. Succinct, easy to follow, but extremely orthodox. Nothing is watered down and it's to the point. Illustrations are well done even if they are a little older style. I really think every first communion student should own this book and read it as a family!

Very pleased with this catechism book for First Holy Communion. Age appropriate with beautiful pictures that help a child understand this wonderful sacrament. I bought this for my grandson and he loves the pictures and is able to understand each of the questions which are simply put. Don't get me wrong, there is no lack of catechism here! On the contrary! My daughter-n-law says it's exactly what she's been looking for to teach her children a solid foundation of the Catholic Faith. I used it for my children and they still believe in the true presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist- thanks be to God! I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking to understand this sacred mystery, especially for children and beginners.

My daughter and I read this slowly preparing for her first communion, and I think it did a much better job than her parochial school curriculum. It covers all the basics very well (Baltimore Catechism style) and provides some good visuals to boot (some of the visuals are probably strong for today's culture of more rosy colored christian picture books but very helpful in the opinion of our family's... which has a taste for realism (visual illustrations of evil people heading towards hell, for example...pictures of evil angels versus good angels, illustrations of christ crucified as well as christ resurrected). Gave me the peace of mind that my kid was at least intellectually ready for her First Communion.
