In "Thriving in Babylon: Why hope, humility, and wisdom matter in a godless culture," Larry Osborne dives head first into the story of Daniel, and how life for him in Babylon was probably not so different than our lives here now. Babylon was a godless society with so many fears, discouragement and spiritual warfare abounding. Larry reiterates that even though Daniel lived thousands of years ago, his story can still teach us so much today. So many people feel that God has forgotten us. The world is a sinful place. But it's entirely possible to live in a godless world, and still have a personal intimate relationship with our Creator. The first half of this book focuses mainly on Daniel's life and the second half focuses on an in-depth look on hope, humility and wisdom. This book is definitely one that made me think. The author presents many good discussions that parallel our world today and Daniel's world so long ago. It's really thought provoking. Another thing I really enjoyed about this book was the author's writing style. He knows his theology but yet he explains it in terms that everyone can understand. I think this would be an excellent book to use for a small group Bible study or even a Sunday School group.I received two copies of this book from Litfuse in exchange for my honest unbiased opinion.
This book provides a clear and very challenging answer to anyone who wonders whether Christians can truly have an impact in today's world where Christianity is under increasing attack. When the world around us is charging Christians with being intolerant and unloving, it's time to look at the models of people like Daniel, who despite being a slave, was able to influence a nation through his personal example of faith. This is a book that gives us hope and a better understanding of just how we are to live. Our job isn't to legislate or otherwise force biblical standards on others, but rather to work hard personally to show how much God has changed our lives so that his work will continue in us and that as a result, others will be drawn to him. Read it and thrive.
We all live in a fallen world, but how are we to operate as an effective influence for Christ to those who need Christ? It's easy to appease other Christians with our actions by acting like we're an exclusive members-only club, shunning all those who are around us, but we aren't called to reach the already-saved; we're called to the lost.Thriving in Babylon will teach and challenge you to become a better influence to the world around us. I recommend this book as a once-a-year read for everyone!
Outstanding practical help for pleasing God and loving others. Just like Daniel, we can make a difference. "Don’t buy the lie that you don’t matter. You do. Don’t buy the lie that your response to the evil in your workplace, community, family, and our nation doesn’t matter. It does. We just have to push the right buttons. They’re called hope, humility, and wisdom. It’s what Daniel did thousands of years ago. It’s what God asks us to do today. It’s how he thrived in his Babylon. And it’s how we can thrive in our own modern-day Babylon."
Thriving in Babylon caused me to look at the biblical book of Daniel from a completely different perspective. It is much more than Daniel and his friends surviving the fiery furnace and lion's den. It is a manual on how to thrive in a culture that is completely contrary to the Kingdom of God.I enjoy the writing style of Larry Osborne. As I read through the book, I could imagine sitting in a room, listening to Pastor Osborne say these things. Easy to understand; easy to apply; and easy to remember.Great book. I enjoyed reading it and am looking forward to other books by Larry Osborne.
Dr. Osborne makes a great contribution at a time when it appears that the evangelical church is largely concerned with political influence and prosperity. Some would say that he short circuits holiness and responsible living. In my view, Osborne explicitly addresses these pitfalls. Moreover, the comparison with the freedom that we have in the United States compared with Daniel in ancient Babylon all the more underscores the value of scriptural hope, humility, and wisdom. If Daniel thrived under the leadership of Nebuchadnezzar, how much more should we in these waning days of our freedom? And, as Dr. Osborne points out, the persecuted church in communist China is doing quite well.In short, I see this book as providing a scripturally based blueprint of principles for how the church and the individual believer will thrive in the current and growing days of exile in both the United States as well as the rest of the world. After all, as the end of the Bible states, God wins.
This book is thought provoking to say the least. The little bits of humor are needed, but the approach that Osborne takes to these issues is a breath of fresh air. For anyone who has been to the point where what you read in Scripture doesn’t match the reality of the church around you, pick up this book. It isn’t a book that has all the answers, but it is a book that clears away the false answers that are available and points the readers in the right direction. When all is said and done, this book, I believe, is a masterfully crafted response to the lazy, religious, apathetic situation the church seems to find itself in today.
I have enjoyed every book that Larry Osborne has written but none as much as this one. The message it contains for the modern American church culture is absolutely needed. We have lost our relevancy to our culture and community because we have bought the lie that we must have religious freedom in order to thrive as Christians. History tells a different story and Larry brings that out beautifully. In my opinion, there is only 1 book ever written that deserves 5 stars and that's the Bible so giving this 4 stars tells you something about my support of this work and message. Great job Mr. Osborne!David HartmanMen's PastorHilltop Community ChurchCarson City, NV
