About the Author
Stan and Jan Berenstain introduced the first Berenstain Bear books in 1962. Mike Berenstain grew up watching his parents work together to write about and draw these lovable bears. Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too. Though Stan died in 2005, and Jan in 2012, Mike continues to create the delightful Bear adventures from his studio in Pennsylvania, in an area that looks much like the sunny dirt road deep in Bear Country.

During our congregational Christmas party, we wanted to give kids gifts that would help the to remember the reason for the season. I knew that the Berenstein Bears stories always have good themes that promote good values, so I knew this would be a safe book, but this story goes one better by retelling the story of Jesus's birth. The book identifies the reading age as 4-8 years old, and I'd say that's a perfect range. The text on each page is short enough that an adult or older sibling can read aloud to younger children without the younger child getting bored. Likewise, the text is easy enough for 1st and 2nd graders (and older kids, too, of course) to read on their own.The story is the traditional Christmas story, with the characters drawn in the same style as is typical of the Berenstein Bears, with clothing and backgrounds fitting the historical time.The books were a hit with our young congregants.
Purchased this book for a 24 day countdown to Christmas. I wrap up 24 books and put them in a open box. Then Dec. 1st I let one of my grandchildren open a book then I read it to them. This way they learn to count, listen, take turns and wait. It is fun to do.
Adorable book! I purchased this for our literary advent calendar tradition. The 12 days of Christmas, done with a book each night. Perfect for our two year old daughter! Would buy again!
Cute story that tells the true meaning of Christmas but the only thing I didn't like was the ending. Good thing I caught it on time and changed the words when I read the book out loud to my family. Instead of saying "dead" I said "passed on"Other than that we really enjoyed the story.
I was disappointed in this book because it contains the exact same story & artwork from the Berenstain Bears Storybook Bible. If you have that children's Bible, then this book may not be worth the money. If you don't, then this book is good to have.
I love the Berenstain Bears. The Berenstain's are always up to something good, and when I say the Berenstain's, I mean the authors. Thank you Mike, for carrying on the beautiful legacy your parent's left behind, and thank you Jan and Stan for starting this wonderful series over 55 years ago now. Now you are WITH Christ. Thank you for writing about the CHRIST within CHRISTMAS. I'm sure you made Him smile. :)
You just can't go wrong with the Berenstain Bears. Kids love them. Adults love them. AND THE MESSAGE in all the books is teaching values. This particular one with the First Christmas is simple and easy for the children to understand. Great book. Don't hesitate.
This book is great until the end. My kids (ages 3, and 6) loved the bear family's retelling of the Chritsmas story but it ended very suddenly. While it was true to the Word, I felt like the story could have wrapped up a little better.
